Camping: Stub Stewart State Park August 2013

Last week my mom, Joel, myself and the kids all packed up and trekked out to Stub Stewart campground (between Banks and Vernonia) to enjoy the wilderness and biking for 3 days!
It was a lot of fun! August really, really , really liked playing in the dirt and gravel and getting grimy and dusty. Needless to say he was thoroughly hosed down on day #2. We also went on a 24 mile bike ride on the Banks/Vernonia trail with the kids in tow in the bike trailer. It was a beautiful, mostly forest covered paved trail with quite a few gradual hills and a brutal 11% grade switchback (where I had to get off and walk my bike for a couple of minutes). I was pretty much dead the last 4 miles home but the ride was challenging and fun! Gus loves riding in the bike trailer but Phoenix is a different story. He fussed on and off for the 12.5 miles to Vernonia and then screamed almost the entire 11.5  miles home. I think he mostly hates his helmet. But it was still fun to ride the famous trail and next we plan on doing the other half of the trail out to Banks!
The actual camping was great, too minus an entire night/morning of being rained on! Gus and Phoenix both slept pretty well in the tent with us and I had a lot of fun cooking gourmet meals while camping! We also had lots and lots of goodies that I baked and brought along (smores bars, toasted coconut pound cake, cream cheese salted caramel brownies, rice krispie treats). I even made homemade levain (a rustic, slightly sourdough bread) that takes 5 days from start to finish! But it was worth it...so yummy! We ate well!

Our campsite, conveniently located directly across from the bathrooms; a must when camping with a toddler who has to pee every 30 minutes!

We made a lot of memories this camping trip and plan to make it a yearly tradition for our family since the campsite is so close to home, yet you are in the middle of the wilderness! Cheers to a fun filled, active summer!
